Back the Bid Leeds’ world record attempt to knit the world’s longest scarf is a little closer to completion thanks to a supporter of the bid…from Finland!
Er Mari from Helsinki in the Nordic country sent a hand knitted scarf along with a postcard of his hometown to Marketing Leeds, who are working closely with Leeds United and Leeds City Council on the bid for Leeds to be a host city for the 2018 World Cup.
He said in his note: “ Here’s a participation from a Leeds United fan since 1968. The scarf is made by my wife. Let’s hope bid is victorious!”
Shaun Harvey, chief executive of Leeds United commented: “It is fantastic that we are getting support from as far and wide as Finland. We have made a keen effort to promote our bid to an international audience, and we know that both Leeds United fans and football fans worldwide have shown their support. Let’s hope that we are successful and we can make our supporters from across the waters proud.”
This scarf is one of many which have already been knitted in an attempt to beat the current world record of 33 miles, which was started in September this year. Leeds Bradford Knitting and Crochet Guild plus local individuals have also knitted scarves in support of the bid, which will then be donated to a good cause.
There are still more miles of scarf to be knitted, but with the deadline not until 2018, there’s still plenty of time to dust off those knitting needles and join in the world record attempt! Simply log on to www.backthebidleeds.com and work to the pattern provided.
Leeds will find out if it is one of the host cities for the 2018 World Cup this Wednesday (16th December). Until then, register your vote on www.backthebidleeds.com.
