Leeds Co-operative Society Ltd is the oldest established consumer Co-op in the UK and probably the world. Established in 1847, the Society was formed to improve the lives of its members by helping to meet their economic social, cultural and educational needs. The Society is owned by nearly 60,000 members and currently operates 18 food convenience stores, a chain of 19 travel agencies, 19 funeral units and 6 opticians as well as operating a substantial investment property portfolio. The co-operative employs some 750 people and has annual turnover of around £75m.

Leeds Co-operative Society has been awarded the accolade of Best Leeds Supermarket for Fairtrade each year since the competition's inception, making 2005 the third consecutive year the Society has been recognised for its commitment to Fairtrade.
