Big Yellow opened its first store seven years ago and is now valued at over £400m on the stock exchange. It is the leading quality self-storage group in the UK. We have pioneered the development of the latest generation of self-storage facilities, which use state of the art technology and are located in high profile, convenient, main road locations.
During the last seven years we have opened 39 stores in the UK and have 19 more stores currently under development. Our 39 trading stores provide 2.3 million square feet (net) of self contained storage space in clean, dry, secure storage rooms which are accessible 7 days a week. Our stores utilise modern access control technology and a high degree of security, including 24 hour digital CCTV, individual room alarms and bespoke personal security PIN number access. When our current portfolio of 58 stores is fully built out, we will have over 3.6 million square feet of storage space.
We now have approximately 28,200 customers renting rooms, but many more have used the business (either self storage or our packing materials shop) over the last seven years. Our expansion has been totally organic and we have opened around six to seven new stores each year. We plan to open around eight to ten stores a year for the next five years. In July 2005 we opened our first store in the North in central Leeds, and have since bought development sites in Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield.
