Leeds is a city of regional, national and international importance boasting a rich history, diverse economy, enterprising people and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Our successes have been built on the outstanding efforts of many, with Leeds City Council proud to be at the forefront. The key to future success is a united approach by our city partners. That’s why Leeds City Council is committed to being a Leeds Champion.
Leeds City Council came into being as a metropolitan district in 1974, instantly increasing its population by half. The city council is driven to providing a stronger and more competitive economy, while narrowing the gap between the most disadvantaged people and the rest of the city. Over recent years it has increased employment, reduced crime and improved educational achievement, health and housing throughout Leeds. External assessors say Leeds City Council – with its 33,000 staff and 99 members – is performing well. Just like the city.
